What We Do
The Cumbria Ecumenical Spirituality Group exists to make the journey of ‘knowing God’ richer and deeper, and to offer companionship on the journey. It does this in a number of ways.
Cumbria Wide Events
We support the development of Mission Communities across the County, and the vision of ‘God for all’. Ecumenical groups sometimes ask us to lead events such as a Lent group, guided week of prayer or quiet days.
For those who want something more in-depth, we run two courses in rotation:
Nourishing The Soul Course
Running from January to November 2021 on Zoom
This comprises 10 sessions at approx monthly intervals.
The day also includes worship and group sharing.
Spiritual Direction Training
Definitions of spirituality
Images of God
Mindfulness, Psychology & Spirituality
Wholeness and Healing
Different ways of using the Bible in prayer
Monastic & Denominational spirituality e.g. Franciscan, Carmelite, Benedictine, Wesleyan, Celtic, Ignatian etc
Silence and solitude, desert and wilderness experiences
Contemplation and meditation
Creativity & Spirituality e.g. music, poetry, art
Creation & Spirituality
This comprises 10 sessions at approx monthly intervals. The topics are similar to the above, but taken to a deeper level. Afternoons are given over to triad work (i.e. practical experience in offering spiritual direction).
Completion of the Nourishing the Soul Course
is usually a requirement.
The course costs approx £300. Bursaries are available on request to those who are unwaged or on a limited income. Drinks, but not lunch, are included.
Many people find it helpful to have a Spiritual Director (or Companion). This is someone who commits themselves to journey with another in their walk with God.
We have a list of trained Spiritual Directors, and are able to help people find the right director for them.
We also offer ongoing training and support for all who work as Spiritual Directors. (In order to train as a Spiritual Director, it is normally a pre-requisite to have been on the Nourishing the Soul Course first, but previous experience is taken into account.)

?What I am most thankful for on the Course so far, is insight into great wisdom from the past that is still as fresh as ever and relevant for our spiritual life today. I remember especially John Chrysostom’s prayer to prepare for reading scripture and his inspiring reflection on why we need to read the Bible.
Nourishing the Soul was very meaningful for me. In spite of struggling through the early months, I was able to feel nourishment and hope. I feel I have grown in ways I never expected.
I have loved the togetherness in prayer, the teaching, lunch and triads. The prayer times have been touching and meaningful with praise and worship to music enriching.
It has been a privilege to be part of this course in such a beautiful environment, enjoying fellowship with a lovely group of people and empathetic tutors with a great depth of knowledge and understanding. The sessions have always been interesting and stimulating.
